This is going to be a weird thing to admit, but I don’t think I’ve ever smoked a Macanudo before. I know that sounds crazy considering that this is one of the brands that so many people smoked as an introduction to the wonderful world of cigars, but I wasn’t one of them. Here are my thoughts:
1) Good construction, nice and even burn, easy draw. The construction and draw on this cigar is what really brought its rating up. I really didn’t know what to expect and my expectations were relatively low, but the Cru delivered with a very enjoyable smoking experience.
2) I found the Cru to be a stouter medium cigar, so a mid to upper level Demi is an appropriate strength rating.
3) I tasted a little cocoa and found the Cru to be an Earthy smoke.
4) My smoke time was one hour and five minutes
Now to the two questions:
Would I smoke it again? Yes
Would I give it humidor space? Yes
I got to Casa de Montecristo in Countryside, IL last night to meet up with a few Cigar Dojo buddies for a HERF and I pulled out the Macanudo for my first smoke and almost instantly the guys looked at me with a sense of bewilderment. The question came, “Dude, you’re smoking a Macanudo?” and my reply was “Yup, going to review this thing”. I knew the Cru Royale had some potential based on the beautiful wrapper and the solid construction, this definitely wasn’t one of those gas station Macanudos. About midway through the smoke, I turn to my buddy Sal and say man, this really is a solid smoke and the flavor profile was consistent with cigars that I typically enjoy. Whether people want to admit it or not, there seems to be a negative connotation surrounding the Macanudo as a beginner brand, however my bottom line on the Cru Royale is that it is worth smoking and worth keeping around. You can have these at $5.59/stick when doing a 5-pack at Famous and they are worth some rental real estate in your humidor as a stronger medium go to option.
